Squalicum High School's DECA Marketing Students Shine
Squalicum students in the DECA marketing club earned top honors in two events at the State DECA conference in Seattle. Tina Mihovilovic and JP Roach placed fourth in the travel and tourism management and decision-making events. Sam Boyle and Maia Bittner placed seventh in the e-commerce management and decision-making events. These students advanced to the national competition April 29-May 3 in Dallas, Texas where they competed along with 13,000 students from around the United States and Canada. DECA is an association of marketing students that provides leadership opportunities for students to apply the skills they are learning in the classroom to real-world situations and prepare them as employable workers.
Bellingham Senior Wins Top High School Vocalist Award
In the June 2006 issue of Downbeat Magazine, Bellingham senior Courtney Fortune was named as a winner in the 29th Annual Downbeat Student Music Awards. She won in the Blues/Pop/Rock category, High School Outstanding Performance - Voice award. The awards honor the accomplishments of U.S. and Canadian junior high, high school and college student musicians.
Students Perform in History Day Contests
Bellingham High juniors Kaitlin Sellereit and Hannah Walker placed second in the senior group performance category at the State History Day Competition on May 6. They will travel to the National History Day Contest at the University of Maryland in mid-June, telling the story of Rose O'Neal Greenhow, a Confederate spy during the Civil War.
Shuksan seventh grader Lisa Beck placed third in the junior individual exhibit category at state and is an alternate to the national competition. Beck's exhibit is "The Everett Massacre: Standing Up For Their Right to Speak." Her exhibit is currently on display in the Shuksan library.
Bellingham Red Raider Band Wins Top Awards
Bellingham High School Marching Band received first place at the Port Townsend Rhododendron Grand Parade in the AAA division on May 20. The Auxiliary unit (color guard) received second place. In the Ski to Sea Grand Parade on May 27, the BHS band took the Best Overall award as well as first place for the Class 3A division. The Sehome High band took second place in the 3A division.
