Summer school will offer literacy and math programs for elementary students, basic skills transitions for students going from grades 5 to 6 and 8 to 9, a middle-level college ready academy, as well as credit ahead and credit retrieval for high school students.
New this year, Middle Level College Ready Academies will support students entering grades 7 and 8 with exploring college and career interests while strengthening their math and literacy skills. The Academies are open to all students. Field trips to local colleges and community connections may be included.
A support class will be offered at no cost for current 10th graders who did not meet standard on the required reading, writing or math sections of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). This course is designed to prepare students for the first WASL retake option in August. Students will be notified of eligibility in June. Meeting state standards is required for graduation for current 11th graders and beyond, and students have five opportunities to take the WASL.
Also for high school students, an elective culminating project course is offered for students entering the 12th grade who want classroom support to get an early start on this graduation requirement.
Summer school enrollment priority is given to students performing below standards as measured by district or state assessments or report card grades. Families should call the classroom teacher to see if a child could benefit from the academic support programs. Fees may apply.
Current fifth and eighth graders need to demonstrate that they can meet the state standards in reading, writing and math, according to the district's Progress and Promotion policy. Summer school is highly recommended for fifth and eighth graders who are not yet meeting grade level standards by June. Summer school will be provided at no charge for these students entering grades 6 and 9 who have been highly recommended for this intervention. Students whose families choose to waive this opportunity will receive additional support and may have an alternate schedule at the next grade level.
