Any Child Eligible for Free Breakfast at Summer School Locations Any child ages 2-18 may eat free breakfast at summer school locations through a federal Simplified Summer Food Program, sponsored by the Bellingham School District. Children do not have to be enrolled in summer school or attend a school to get free breakfast. Read more... Dr. Kinsley came to the district as superintendent in 1991 after serving for 10 years as superintendent of the Santa Cruz City School District in California. Prior, he held positions at the University of California at Santa Cruz, at the Agency for International Development and as a classroom teacher. He began his career as a Peace Corps teacher in Morocco in 1964. He received his bachelor's degree from Princeton University and his doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts. Shuksan 50th Anniversary ![]() Photo: Shuksan eighth graders Iris Gonzalez and Rosa Posas led alumna Nancy Hoff (SMS class of '59) on a school tour on Thursday to celebrate Shuksan's 50th anniversary. Hoff started middle school at Whatcom, moving to Shuksan when it opened as part of its first seventh grade class. Current Shuksan students hosted school tours and an evening celebration with its PTSA, community members and alumni. Happy Valley is the other district school that will celebrate its 50th this year. High School WASL Information By mid-June, Bellingham School District 10th, 11th or 12th grade students who took the 2007 Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) this spring will receive individual score reports mailed to their homes, detailing their performance on the reading, writing and math sections. Summer School Applications Now Being Accepted The Bellingham School District is now accepting applications for summer school, which will run Monday through Thursday from July 9 to Aug. 9. Summer school will offer literacy and math programs for elementary students, basic skills transitions for students going from grades 5 to 6 and 8 to 9, a middle-level college ready academy, as well as credit ahead and credit retrieval for high school students. Community members are invited to celebrate Superintendent Dale Kinsley's 16 years of service to the Bellingham School District during an open house reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 8 at the Squalicum Boathouse, 2600 Harbor Loop at Zuanich Point Park. The event is open to the public.
