Following 37 years of service in public education, Bellingham School District Deputy Superintendent Susan Zoller has accepted a position with the international consulting firm MGT America as of  March 14. In her new position, Zoller will be working with staff and families in school districts across the country and world.

"Ms. Zoller is well known throughout the state for her in-depth knowledge and leadership in improving instructional practice," says Superintendent Kenneth Vedra. "Susan has been extremely dedicated to our school system and has had a significant impact on teaching and learning over the last 14 years. She will be missed. We wish her great success in this exciting career opportunity."

Zoller worked as director of curriculum from 1994 to 1997. Prior,  she served as assistant superintendent of school administration and improvement from 1997 to 1999 before becoming deputy superintendent in 1999.

"I am in awe of the work that teachers do every day with students and families," Zoller says. "The district also has great administrators. They want the best for children, work long hours and take on the right issues. I have benefited from the professional learning opportunities that the district has offered me and the many people that I have had the chance to work with. I look forward to taking my learning from Bellingham and sharing it with others."

Before coming to Bellingham, Zoller worked from 1991 to 1994 as curriculum director for Moscow School District in Idaho and from 1978 to 1991 as curriculum director for Bonner County School District in Idaho. She began her career in education in 1971 as an elementary teacher in Philadelphia.

Zoller earned her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, her master's degree and doctoral coursework in reading, curriculum and instruction from the University of Pennsylvania, and her educational administration certificate from the University of Idaho.

Staff and community members are invited to an open house reception in Zoller's honor from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, March 10 in the Board Room, 1306 Dupont St.

The Bellingham School District will begin a search for Zoller's replacement that will include a process involving representatives of students, parents, community members and staff. The position will be filled for the 2008-09 school year.  The School Board accepted Zoller's resignation at the Feb. 28 Board meeting.
