Dear families,
At Fairhaven, we are fortunate to have excellent staff and students. Recently they have been recognized for a variety of awards and honors. Please allow me to summarize some of our recognitions:
• Paul Klein and our student Choirs: received highest scores at the San Juan Educators Music Adjudication,
• Cathy Gersich (Art): recipient of Technology Grant for the coming school year,
• Joel Gillman (8th LA/SS): recipient of the Mayor's Art Award,
• Dustin Heaton (8th math), selected to be trained as a teacher leader for College Preparatory Mathematics,
• Laurie Hoyt (7th science), passed her National Boards Certification (highest achievement for teachers),
• Susan Foster (7th LA/SS), recognized by WWU for supporting student teachers,
• Jason Newell (7th grade), semi-finalist in the Washington State Geography Bee, and
• Nicola Morrow and Anya Taylor (7th grade), who placed 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the Whatcom County Essay Contest.
While these stars shine brightly in our community, we also have many daily acts that deserve recognition:
• Tanya Pepe (PE), whose excellent organization of the complex WASL assessment is admired throughout the district,
• Miguel Boriss (8th Science) and Kari VanHouten (8th Social Studies), who regularly coach our other teachers in best practic
• Karl Ritter and Beth Bacon (counselors) for the establishment of the CHAT room; an alternate lunch room, where students play learning based games, communicate with new friends, and feel the comfort of a smaller environment,
• Teachers: Brian Beatty, Susan Foster, Janie Overman, Stephanie Strow, Laurie Hoyt, Erin Gaulding, Kim Wichers, Alex Paige, Todd Zimmerman and others, who provide regular after school programs for students to get support with homework, and
• Callie Hart and Dan Stockwell who spear-head our service learning opportunities for eighth grade students.
And so the list goes on. We are a community rich in talented and resourceful students and staff! Recently our Superintendent, Dr. Ken Vedra, and our School Board have launched a district recognition program. On behalf of Dr. Vedra and members of the Board, I would like to invite you or your child to nominate:

• Classified staff member of the year, and
• Volunteer of the year.
Nominations are due in our office by Monday, April 28. Please use the Nomination form below and attach a short paragraph describing why your nominee should be honored. Thank you for your support of all of our staff!
