Four days before families arrived, we started moving boxes and furniture back into the building as cleaning crews began getting rid of the thick layer of dust. Two days before families arrived, the office phone, fax, and computer were hooked up so that we could register kids. One and a half days before families arrived, I hired three new employees. One and a half hours before families arrived, our network went down and we couldn't print our class lists. One hour before families arrived, the cabinets were re-cut in two rooms so that kids could actually use the wall mounted cubbies. Thirty minutes before families arrived, the air quality tester unhooked his machines and left. Fifteen minutes before families arrived, the circuit in the fire alarm was replaced to silence the high pitched beeping that had been going on for days. As the families arrived, our secretary returned from FMS where she was able to print and copy the class lists. I am proud to be part of a district that is able to pull together for children. While stressful, the week before school was an incredible team building experience that tested and revealed the strong character of our employees. Many of us are tired, battered, and bruised, but our victory was evident when children arrived at Larrabee ready to learn, and they had an environment ready for them. At the risk of leaving someone out I have a few special thanks to give: My wife, Michele, who was only half kidding when she said, "Why didn't you just stay there?" when I got home after 3:00 am on Thursday before school. The Larrabee Staff and your relatives who showed up to help- YOU DID IT! Anne Flinn, I don't know how she stayed organized without an office while registering 80+ new families. PTA representatives and other families who unloaded boxes. Celeste Miracle, her last name pretty much sums it up. Not only did she get the major tasks done, but she even painted the bathroom floors on Sunday to give the building an extra sparkle. Network Services managers John Getchell and George Hartnell were in the trenches hooking up computers and phones with the techs. They demonstrated great leadership! Mark Aarstol, lead guy for Dawson Construction. He understands schools beyond the construction work (His wife, Donna, a teacher at Roosevelt, trained him well). Mike Anderson, Ron Cowan, and Ken Vedra put up with my barrage of emails and made frequent site visits to see what they could do to help. That was great leadership! FMS for letting us use classroom space and your computers. The people behind the scenes who I don't even know about. All of you prove education is about the people, not the building. Eric Paige

The dust is figuratively and literally clearing more and more each day and a big Thank You is long over due. I would like to thank the many people who helped get Larrabee ready and open for students this year. The week before school started, our building was literally in shambles and I was asked by community members and staff whether we would be ready on time. My answer, "We don't have a choice." We held our family "Meet and Greet" at 3:00 pm on Friday Aug 29 and most attendees didn't even know that we had just stopped construction only minutes before they arrived. Here is a snippet of what staff experienced as they prepared for the arrival of your children.
