Our Site Council will be getting underway in early October. Their charge is to put building goals into practice and ultimately to make recommendations that improve student learning. This will be an interesting and challenging task as we look to boost student performance to a new level. If you are interested in serving on the Council, please give me a call, 676-6450, during working hours for further information. Open House is scheduled for the evening of September 30th (6th grade) and October 1 (7th, 8th grade). You will have an opportunity to meet the teachers and to learn about our school and terrific PTSA. The parent representatives for our site council will be selected during the evening festivities. Safety is an important part of walking to and from school. One of the most hazardous areas can be the bridge and intersection in front of Fairhaven. We ask that parents speak to their students and help them understand that it is important to wait for the proper signal before crossing the intersection. It is also important to walk a bicycle when crossing the intersection and using the bridge. Students should also stay on the sidewalks when crossing the bridge. Traffic can be very congested both before and after school. We ask that parents slow down as they approach these areas and drive with our students' safety in mind. School lost and found clothing items are hanging on a rack in our entry lobby. If you don't find what you are looking for-ask us. We have a drawer full of small items: jewelry, watches, glasses, etc. waiting to be claimed.

As we look to pick up threads from the past year and to weave the start of a new year, we find that 2008-2009 holds many challenges and opportunities for our school. Across the district we are beginning plans to prepare every child for College, Career, and Citizenship. We will be looking at our math curriculum and student placement with the intent to provide every child with a rigorous math experience. Five of our FMS teachers will be implementing new interactive technology in their classrooms. Alexandra Paige, Dustin Heaton, Leslie McInnis, Cathy Gersich, and Stephanie Strow have just completed the first leg of their training and are busy preparing for the infusion and integration of Activeboards in their classrooms. We are in the final stages of launching our third computer lab, which is a portable, wireless unit that can be wheeled from classroom to classroom.
