As you can see from the calendar of events, the school year is already well underway with much learning taking place each day. In addition to academic learning the Northern Heights' staff understand the importance of helping our students develop positive personal attitudes that contribute to their welfare and that of others. These attitudes are demonstrated as children interact with one another, move about their environment and engage in learning. This year our school community has adopted the "Get An Attitude!" program. This program teaches a different attitude each month. A common definition is introduced, followed by classroom and school-wide activities that reinforce the attitude. Cooperation and respect are the attitudes of focus in September and October. Each month parents will receive a newsletter with information about the attitude of focus. We hope you will use the activities and discussion points to reinforce this important social learning at home! We also look forward to receiving your feedback on this program throughout this year. I look forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming Open House and Ice Cream Social on September 30th! With smiles, Wendy Barrett,
Early Release Day Enrichment Program We have great news! The American Museum of Radio and Electricity (AMRE) will offer an enrichment program for Northern Heights' children on the afternoons of six early release days this school year. This program will begin on the October 20th early release day. AMRE will teach various scientific concepts using artifacts from the museum. Topics will include electricity, radio and radio waves. There will be 100 spaces available for children to participate in this exciting program. Look for more information coming your way in the next few weeks. The ALCOA Women's Network is providing an action grant that includes volunteer time and generous financial support to help fund a large portion of the program. This program was created by Northern Heights' parent, Kate Haskell, last year. Entitled Investigating Art and Science with Kids (I ASK) program, the program began at Alderwood Elementary and is now being expanded to Northern Heights. A big THANK YOU goes to the ALCOA Women's Network, AMRE and Kate for bringing this opportunity to our children.
