The Bellingham School District has five Semifinalists and 10 Commended Students in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Competition. To qualify for the competition, students took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during the 2007-08 school year.
In order for Semifinalists to become Finalists, students must have an excellent academic record throughout high school, be recommended by the principal, submit a scholarship application and receive SAT scores that match the student's performance on the PSAT/NMSQT.
District National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are Sehome High School's Angela Hess, Zoey Koontz, Diana Wu and Rolf Ypma; and Bellingham High School's Madeline Hopper.
District Commended Students are Bellingham High School's Dylan Albrecht, Nigel Packer and Christopher Thorsvik; Squalicum High School's David Amonsen, Brian Emmett and Hana Kaneshige; and Sehome High School's Keith Davidson, Bryn Smith, Paul Tefft-Meeker and Jackson Daugherty.
Commended Students will no longer continue in the competition, but placed in the top five percent of 1.5 million students who entered the competition, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They receive a letter for their academic honor.
