Changes to Basic Food Program Allow More Families to Qualify The Bellingham School District is partnering with the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) to help distribute important information to families in the district. More students will be eligible for free meals at school because more families will qualify for Basic Food (Food Stamps). As of Oct. 1, the income eligibility for Basic Food (formerly Food Stamps) will significantly increase. If your family has typically not qualified for food stamps because your family income was too high, you may now qualify. If your family qualifies, your school-aged children will automatically be enrolled in the schools' free meal program for the rest of the school year. A family with two children eating school lunch every day could save $1,000 in lunch costs over the course of the school year. Other benefits include reduced Associated Student Body (ASB) fees, athletic fees, and club memberships for the Bellingham Boys & Girls Club and Bellingham Parks and Recreation. For details and Basic Food applications in English, Spanish and Russian: www.bham.wednet.edu/departments/foodservices/foodservices.htm All applications must be returned to the DSHS office, 4101 Meridian St., Bellingham. Please call toll-free at 1-877-514-3663 with any questions. Shuksan is participating in the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey on October 16, 2008. The survey is for 6th and 8th graders only. The survey is being administered by our counseling office. If you have questions, please phone Ms. Cowan at 676 6454 x 5354. You may opt-out your student by phoning the main office at 676 6454 x0. An informational brochure can be viewed at: www.hys.wa.gov/Administration/ParentBrochures.aspx HIV/AIDS Prevention Curriculum - Fifth Grade and Middle School Washington State law (RCW28A.230.070) requires public schools in the State of Washington to teach about the "life threatening dangers" of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) grade 5 and beyond. Information on this topic will be presented to all 5th through 8th grade students during the school year. A parent meeting for fifth grade and middle school parents to learn more about the HIV/AIDS curriculum and preview HIV/AIDS curriculum materials that will be used with students is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Roeder Administration Building, 1306 Dupont Street.
