MS Art Students' Efforts on Display: written by Cathy Gersich, Art Teacher
Sunday, October 5th at the County Courthouse from 4:00-6:00 pm.
Last year, FMS art class students participated in making origami cranes in support of the 14,000 Cranes for Whatcom County Project: Hope and Support for People with Mental Illness. The cranes will be on display as part of a dedication ceremony on Sunday, October 5th, should you wish to take your child. The cranes will be flying at the courthouse from October 5th-17th.
Our students worked with volunteers from the Mental Illness support group who told students about how common mental illness is in our society and the community of Bellingham. After that discussion, each student learned how to fold an origami crane and then, each made a few as a symbol of support. Some students even worked over the weekend on their own and brought in bags of extra cranes!
Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)- Grades 3, 4, 5, and 8th Grade Students Who Are Not Yet at Standard (NYAS) as Measured by the WASL All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students along with NYAS 8th grade students will be participating in the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) between September 22 and October 15, 2008. MAP is a computer-generated mathematics assessment that takes students about an hour to complete. The MAP assessment is unique because the software adapts to an appropriate level for your child's current understanding. This unique level continues from one testing season to the next. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to maintain a positive attitude toward testing. The MAP assessment provides one "snapshot" of student performance. Used in conjunction with classroom assessments, results from these tests help students, teachers and parents better understand each student's progress toward meeting district standards for achievement. In addition, results help teachers and administrators identify strengths and areas for future improvement in our instructional programs. Within 72 hours after testing, teachers can access individual student reports that give detailed information about each student's math skills. This year all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be assessed in math (using MAP) three times per year - fall, winter, and spring. 8th grade students whom are not yet at standard (NYAS) will take the MAP on math to demonstrate their progress toward standard or to indicate that they have met the standard in math.
Operation School Bell The Bellingham School District is working with the Assistance League of Bellingham and the Operation School Bell program to provide free, new clothes for elementary school children who qualify. The program is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade who are eligible for the free and reduced-price meal plan through the school district. Operation School Bell is a free program from the Assistance League of Bellingham that starts the first of September and runs until February. Qualifying children will "shop" at a boutique stocked with new clothes in their downtown Bellingham shop. Interested parents and children can apply by contacting Patty Hoff or Roxana Parise in student services at the district office: 1306 Dupont Street, Bellingham, WA 98225, (360) 676-6524 or (360) 676-6523 For more information about the Assistance League or to support Operation School Bell, contact Assistance League Thrift and Gift: 1415 Cornwall, Bellingham WA 98225, (360) 738-2803.
District News:
Save Fuel and $$$: If Your Child Will Ride the Bus, Make It Count from Oct. 6-10
The Bellingham School District will count children who ride our school buses during the week of Oct. 6-10. The transportation funding that we receive from Washington State for the entire school year is determined by the number of students who ride the bus to school for a minimum of three mornings (or mid-day to kindergarten) during this designated week. The state does not provide funding based on afternoon ridership. This funding is essential to help pay for your child's transportation to and from school throughout the school year. Thank you for your support.
