The Bellingham School District and the following schools received Academic Improvement Awards from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) for reducing by 10 percent the number of students who missed the reading, writing or math goals from one school year to the next: Alderwood Elementary for grade four writing; Columbia Elementary for grade four reading, writing and math; Fairhaven Middle for grade seven math; Happy Valley Elementary for grade four reading, writing and math; Kulshan Middle for grade seven reading and writing; Larrabee Elementary for grade four writing; Northern Heights Elementary for grade four reading, writing and math; Options High, for grade 10 reading and writing; Parkview Elementary for grade four writing and math; Sehome High for grade 10 writing and math; Shuksan Middle for grade seven reading, writing and math; Silver Beach Elementary for grade four reading and writing; Squalicum High for grade 10 writing and math; Sunnyland Elementary for grade four math; and Whatcom Middle for grade seven writing. The district overal received the ared for grade four math, grade seven reading and grade 10 writing and math. The district and schools earned this distinction in reading, writing and or math based on their 2007 Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) scores in grades four, seven or 10.
