The Bellingham School District has six Semifinalists and 13 Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Competition. To qualify for the competition, students took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during the 2008-09 school year.
In order for Semifinalists to become Finalists, students must have an excellent academic record throughout high school, be recommended by the principal, submit a scholarship application and receive SAT scores that match the student's performance on the PSAT/NMSQT.
District National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are Sehome High School's Evan Ingalls, Matthew Junttila, Louise Highleyman and Franz 'Eric' Schneider; and Squalicum High School's Austin Czarnecki and Caitlin Villaroman.
District Commended Students are Bellingham High School's Amelia Asbe, Alexander Hoelzen and Robert Naff; Sehome High School's Owen Chambers, Molly LeCompte, Evan Madill, Cameron McCreery, Ryan Newell and Madison Smith; and Squalicum High School's Hunter Bennett, Danny Gibson, Michael Greene and Meredith Morrow-Okon.
Commended Students will no longer continue in the competition, but placed in the top five percent of 1.5 million students who entered the competition, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They receive a letter for their academic honor.
