Dear Parents, The leaves are changing and suddenly swirling around the neighborhood in windy gusts. It is hard to imagine that the first month of school has already whizzed by. Here at Fairhaven we have managed to settle into some comfortable sense of routine. We enjoy greeting the students as they arrive filled with anticipation and excitement about the coming day. October 29th is our first big family social, the Masquerade Ball. Please mark your calendar for an unforgettable evening event and begin thinking about those family costumes! More information will be forthcoming from our PTSA in the next few weeks.
EMERGENCY RELEASE PROCEDURES: FMS (put this on your refrigerator!) Each year at Fairhaven Middle School, we review our emergency procedures to ensure that we are prepared to respond appropriately to any crisis. We know that in the event of a school emergency, parents will want immediate access to their children. Our plan is to ensure the safety of students and the orderly release of all students to their families.
■ If the school building is evacuated, signs at the corner of Park Ridge and Hawthorne will direct you to the student release area. School personnel will supervise and organize students by grade level on our various fields. ■ If the entire site is evacuated, we will move to one of our off-site evacuation areas: Bellingham Tennis Club or Fairhaven Park. ■ It is important that all adults remain calm and patient so that staff can connect students with their parents as quickly and efficiently as possible. We need to be sure that all students are accounted for and are released to appropriate adults. ■ Please follow these four procedures for communication: o Check the district emergency website: www.bsd501.org o Listen to local media for updates and information o Call the district information phone line: 676-6400. o Please keep our school phone line clear
By following the guidelines we are establishing, parents can be sure that all children will be carefully released and accounted for. The safety of your children is our number one priority and we appreciate your patience and assistance during any emergency. If you have any questions or concerns in regard to these emergency release procedures, please contact me at 676-6450.
Sincerely, Deirdre O’Neill, Principal
School News
Absence: Parents are required to phone the school attendance office (676-6876) on or before the beginning of their child’s absence. To be excused, parents need to phone the school within 48 hours of the absence; there are three reasons for excused absences - illness or health concerns, family emergencies, and family religious observances. Parents are also required to send a note to school excusing the absence on the day their child returns to school; without a note the absence will be unexcused. For prearranged absences of more than four (4) days, parents shall contact the attendance secretary in writing a week before the scheduled absence so students can get a work contract and stay caught up with schoolwork. Make-up work will be confined to homework assignments, teacher handouts, textbook pages covered, quizzes and scheduled tests. It is the student’s responsibility to ask teachers for any missed assignments.
Excessive Absences: Many learning opportunities that cannot be made up later are missed when students are absent.
Because of this, if a student is absent for ten or more days during a semester parents may be contacted and/or a conference will be scheduled to consider the impact absences have had on academic progress. Both excused and unexcused absences count towards these ten days.
District News
The Bellingham School District is counting children who ride our school busses from October 6-9 and October 12. The transportation funding that we receive from Washington state for the entire year is determined by the number of students who ride the bus to school in the morning or mid-day to kindergarten) during these designated days. This funding is essential to help pay for your child’s transportation to and from school throughout the school year. Thank you for your support.
It's not too late to sign up for Girls on Track! Registration is still open for Girls on Track. This awesome program combines lessons on building self-confidence and making healthy choices with physical games and running activities. The focus is on self-improvement, rather than competition. Groups meet at Fairhaven Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. The fall season runs October 1st to December 5th. The $115 fee covers the 22 meetings, healthy snacks, a Girls on Track T-shirt, a water bottle and entrance into our culminating 5k event in downtown Bellingham on December 5th. Contact the Girls on the Run/Girls on Track Coordinator at 733-8630 or jgallant@whatcomymca.org for more information.
