Hello, Geneva Families! We have made it through our first round of inclement weather, and winter break begins next week. This is a wonderful time of year, and I hope you and your family enjoy peace and happiness together. We are already looking forward to seeing our students return in January!
As you know, the Whatcom Middle School 6th grade team has joined the Geneva family, and the transition has gone remarkably well. This is testament to all of the hard work and support from everyone in our school community. Compassion and caring are what the Gnomes are all about! We are also about action! When asked to help, we were willing and able and got the school ready for our new friends in record time.
We have now been asked by our superintendent, Sherrie Brown, to continue hosting the WMS 6th grade team for the remainder of the school year. I told her that we would love to continue hosting and helping in any way that we can. I also let her know that we will need some additional support, not only for the 6th graders, but also for our own student body. I want to ensure you that we will have everything we need in order to make this all work seamlessly. This includes additional student supervision, custodial staff, office staff, and library assistant time. We will also be adding some additional computers in the library, along with more bookshelves for a 6th grade collection.
While the WMS 6th grade team will continue to maintain their identity as Whatcom Wildcats, we are looking at ways for us to come together as a whole school and build some common experiences. The 6th graders, for example, will be joining our upcoming whole-school fundraising effort called Pennies for Peace. This is being organized by our very own Helping Hands service learning group for interested 4th and 5th grade students.
We have so much to be thankful for as a school community. Thank you all for the many different ways in which you support us and your students in making Geneva such a great place to learn and grow. Have a fun and restful break! Sincerely, Mr. Heritage
Music Report Cards
After the New Year, report cards will be distributed. Music report cards will be included for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Most students earn a “3” in music, based upon their individual participation during music classes. If a student wishes to earn a “4” in music, they must earn a “3” for participation PLUS create a music report. This report consists of information about one of the following: 1. Music composer (i.e. Bach) 2. Music performer(s) (i.e. Elvis Presley) 3. Musical instrument (i.e. Violin) 4. Style of music (i.e. Jazz) I require 3rd graders to create one page of information plus an optional picture/illustration, 4th graders create 1 ½ pages and 5th graders create 2 pages. Each report must include the student’s full name and their classroom teacher’s name. It will be due January 28, 2010. Questions? Email me at sawood@bham.wednet.edu Musically Yours, Ms. Wood - Elementary music specialist - Geneva
Information on Weather/Emergency
Depending on weather conditions, schools will close for the day, open two hours late with regular bus routes or snow routes, or open on time with snow bus routes. Changes to the school schedule are usually announced by 6 a.m. Weather emergencies can sometimes disrupt power and telephone service. The district will use a variety of methods to keep you informed (as noted above). Please do not call Transportation because it is important to keep lines open for emergencies. Also please pay close attention to the options of information so as not to tie up school lines.
• Students do not arrive before 10:30…..as our staff arrives safely there is no supervision before this time.
New for 2009-10: We have been notified that Whatcom County plans to implement emergency road restrictions ( after prolonged cold weather and as the temperature rises ) to prevent road surfacing damage. We have been informed that the county will not allow school buses on some roads, due to vehicle weight, during restriction when thawing occurs. This means that the district may be forced to implement snow routes and possible other route changes during thawing when there is no snow or ice on the roads. If buses are not allowed on some roadways, parents/guardians will need to be prepared to make alternate arrangements or transport children to and from school during the county’s restriction period.
