Rachel’s Challenge: On Wednesday, January 6, Fairhaven and Whatcom students took part in the Rachel’s Challenge assembly. Rachel Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School shootings in 1999. Her family started the Rachel’s Challenge organization as a way of carrying on Rachel’s message of hope and compassion in order to end bullying and harassment in schools. Rachel believed that small acts of kindness could change the world for the better. Students were invited to accept Rachel’s Five Challenges by signing their name to the school banner which will eventually be hung up in the Commons to remind students of the commitment they have made to: 1. look for the best in others 2. believe in themselves and set goals 3. choose positive influences 4. use kind words and practice simple acts of kindness 5. start a positive chain reaction. Another way students can show their commitment to the challenges written above is to purchase clothing and bracelets from Rachel’s Challenge (10% of the sales come back to the school). Clothing order forms are available in the office and in Mrs. Strow’s room (314). All order forms need to be submitted to Mrs. Strow or turned into the office by Friday, January 22.
Attention Math Students: It is time to start thinking about Math Championships! Coaching staff is all lined up and we will be meeting on Wednesday evenings. Our first meeting will be an informational meeting on 20 January 2010 at 6:00 in the library. (Please note early time to accommodate orchestra students!) After that we will meet weekly from 6:30 to 8:00 in the Library. Complete information will be given out at the first meeting and will be available in the office for anyone who is unable to make the first meeting. All students are invited. Questions? Contact Bobbie Jaffe at robertajaffe@comcast.net
School Newsletter: Would you like your writing to get published? How about reporting on Fairhaven School sports? The Fairhaven Middle School student newsletter needs writers, reporters, editors, artists and more for this year's newsletter staff. Join us on Wednesday, January 13, after school in the library or call Tova Saxe at 746-8103 for more information.
Wrestling: Last year the Fairhaven Wrestling Team fought hard for their victories. Giving up mostly forfeits in the weight classes above 130 pounds the team would have to build early leads and hope the math worked out. Against other schools Fairhaven usually won more matches, but with forfeits, the team scores often became uncomfortably close. With the experience of returning eighth graders and the talent of the seventh graders the team looks to have more success this season. There are at least a few Grizzly Wrestlers that could finish the season undefeated and City Champions. Listen for their names during morning announcements! The Wrestling coaches are hoping for a large contingent of sixth graders to participate this year and help carry on recent tradition. Coaches are also looking for some large body help to fill those vacancies above 130 pounds. There are many Fairhaven athletes that will do other sports in high school and not be able to Wrestle, so now may be their last opportunity. Expectations are high for an exciting Grizzly Wrestling Team and season.

PTSA News:
FARM-TO-SCHOOL GRANT: A group of PTSA members have been awarded a grant for Fairhaven from Sustainable Connections of Whatcom County. The grant will support a new after-school snack program every Wednesday starting in January. Snacks will come from local farms and vendors, and will hopefully pave the way for more fresh, local food during the day at Fairhaven! For more details about the grant, and the upcoming program, please see the display case the PTSA bulletin board, or contact Sandy Chasteen (sandy.chasteen@yahoo.com) or Gail Knops (knopsalarna@comcast.net). Also, keep posted for further information about a new Sustainability Club for students...coming soon!
Calling all parents: PTSA meetings are held the second Monday of every month at 7 PM. We would love to have your input, share ideas, and bring you up to date on what is being planned for the future. All members are welcome!
Volunteers are needed for the Excess Funds Committee; please contact Kerri Sloan to volunteer.
