Larrabee’s Spanish Connection has been a huge success this year for the kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders. Twice a week, two Spanish education interns, Mikell and Tiffany, from WWU have been using the Total Physical Response method to teach Spanish within the content areas of music and PE. This method of teaching incorporates a significant amount of movement and works best with two teachers because all instructions and all information is given in Spanish. No English is spoken by the teachers during class. Larrabee parent, Holly Studley, has been instrumental in creating this partnership with Professor John Underwood from WWU, and our goal is to extend the program to the older grades in the future. Originally the Spanish Connection classes were supposed to run through February . Unfortunately, Mikell has had to take a sudden leave of absence due to family medical reasons, and at this point in the class it would not be feasible to train a new partner to work with Tiffany. Therefore, Tiffany will begin her assessments of the children now rather than in February. We are also discussing ways to create learning extensions (games, videos, books on tape) that can allow children to continue practicing the Spanish skills they have been learning. I appreciate the professional and caring manner in which Tiffany and Mikell have worked with our students. They both are excellent teachers. Also, my heart is heavy for Mikell who was only months away from completing her degree and is now facing a family emergency. I will keep you informed as we continue to develop the Spanish Connection program. Have a wonderful weekend! Eric Paige
