I had planned to discuss with you budget issues, but fortunately my procrastination in writing this week’s newsletter has led to a topic which I find much more uplifting. The Larrabee Chess Club recently participated in a tournament and won the overall school title. While the win was certainly good news and a credit to the hard work of the coaches and students, the real triumph was the sportsmanship that was demonstrated during the tournament by a Larrabee third grader. During one of the matches, a Larrabee student put his opponent in check and the opponent did not know what move to make to gain freedom. Therefore, the opponent conceded the win. Rather than accept the win, the Larrabee student showed his opponent a move that would allow the game to continue. I am not sure what the outcome of the game was; I didn’t ask. It wasn’t important to me. Don’t interpret that as me not being a competitive person. I enjoy competing and when I do I play to win, but I also recognized that there are many different ways to win. To me, that action demonstrated by the Larrabee student indicated that playing the game was more important than winning. Teaching your opponent how to be better will require you to raise your own level of performance the next time you meet. We often think of our Olympic athletes as role models for our children. In this case it was a child setting the example for all of us. Have a wonderful weekend! Eric Paige
