This week I learned the Spanish word ganas (desire and drive). Bolivian-born math teacher Jaimie Escalante, who taught in the barrios of East Los Angeles, died on March 30, 2010. Mr. Escalante “believed that a teacher should never, ever let a student give up.” Ganas was his battle cry. In 1982, Mr. Escalante was ridiculed by his colleagues and principal for requesting to teach a calculus class, because it was believed that students from the barrio couldn’t be successful. When all 18 students passed the Advanced Placement Calculus exam they were accused of cheating. To prove their innocence they retested, and again all 18 passed. What the exam board did not realize was that these students, many of them who had trouble with their multiplication facts at the beginning of the year, typically spent one hour before school, three hours after school and many weekends studying. That is ganas, and Mr. Escalante made those opportunities available.
In honor of Mr. Escalante I would like to congratulate a few students who were recently recognized by our District and State for their ganas. Ava Baumgartner, Fiona Layton, Katie Layton, and Ava MacIlvaine put together a team called the Larrabee-vers and won the District-wide 5th grade Sasquatch Reading Competition. On their own time, this group read a collection of books to prepare for the competition. Two other students, Mary From and Jennifer Frye, spent last weekend at the State Science and Engineering Fair. Mary received Best in Show for her project, and Jennifer was awarded third place for her project and was a member of the first place Highly Capable Learners Program team. Imagine if we all tapped into our passions.
Have a wonderful Spring Break!

Spanish Connection News:
Spanish Connection has recently published a website! The interns spent a great deal of time filming video lessons which review much of the content they learned earlier this year. Watching the videos will be a fun and interactive way for students to further their Spanish speaking and comprehension skills. The website also includes program updates, contact information and a wide selection of links to fun and interesting Spanish websites. Here is the website link: http://www.spanishconnection.weebly.com/ Enjoy!
