Dear families,
For the past ten years, one of the great honors and privileges of my life has been to serve as principal of Fairhaven Middle School. It has been a joy to come to work every single day and build relationships with students, staff, and families of our community. Fairhaven is an outstanding school because of the wonderful people who comprise it, who dream for it, and who work together to continually improve it. You are the best of the best!
This past Wednesday, when I accepted the OSPI Award of Overall Excellence for our school, I felt great satisfaction for the learning and improvements we achieved during my tenure. This seemed an appropriate moment to bring to a close my decade of leadership. I will be retiring from public education at the end of the school year. My husband, Troy, and I plan to the visit the antiquities of Greece and Italy in the fall, and bicycle through the Dolomites before returning to the many opportunities that await us in Bellingham.
Thank you for your many personal kindnesses to me over the years. I have great admiration for your commitment to our students and our school.
My gratitude, fondness, and respect to each of you, Deirdre O’Neill
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE COMING SCHOOL YEAR:
How many 8th grade football teams will there be? The number of students who pay-to-participate will determine the number of football teams that are created. WMS and FMS students will be integrated.
What about helmets and shoulder pads? With the availability of helmets and pads that were rescued from Whatcom, there will be enough to equip all students who turn out.
What about uniforms? There will be a need for jerseys for most sports. A decision was made by WMS administrators not to use the WMS jerseys for the coming school year. Assistant Principal, Ann Buswell, is developing a plan to secure additional uniforms. Your ideas and suggestions will be helpful.
Please e-mail your questions about next year to me at deirdre.oneill@bellinghamschools.org .
PTSA News:
This year’s Middle School Challenge will be held Saturday, June 5th at Whatcom Falls Park. If Fairhaven has the most students show up for the event, we can win back the trophy! All Fairhaven Students and staff are encouraged to attend. There will be plenty of food, energy, and prizes. If you want more information, or can volunteer please email klmfoster@hotmail.com
Service Project: There are a couple service opportunities coming up if you haven’t yet fulfilled your pledge from our Fall Fundraiser. This Saturday you can help break ground on the school’s brand new Edible Forest Garden! The work party will be from 10-1pm, meeting at the back side of the school. Bring work gloves if you have them. The other opportunity is next Monday during early release from 11:30-2:30. We will be exploring Padden Creek and picking up garbage as we go. Meet under the tree in the foyer. If you have already fulfilled your pledge or didn’t pledge but want to join in, you’re welcome to join the work parties.
8th Grade Parents, as the 8th grade celebration approaches there are several ways you can get involved and help make the events extra special for all of our kids. We are still looking for volunteers to help. We need 1-2 more volunteers to assist with collecting, displaying and then returning baby pictures, for the 8th grade baby picture display. We need parents to join us on May 20th and May 26th to label large gold stars, that will be used as decorations at the dance. Each student takes his/hers home.
The most important help we need is funds. We hope to collect some donation from each graduating student's family to help pay for these events. While the PTSA helps sponsor the events, it would be impossible to cover all expenses (refreshments, DJ, decorations, games, etc) without help from families. Please make checks out to FMS/PTSA and write "8th grade celebrations" in note area. There is a large, red donation box in the office for cash or check donations. Donations of $10 are suggested, but if you are able to give more, your contributions will be well used and much appreciated.
8th grade photos: If you have some good shots, please contact Susan Collins, collinsfamily4@comcast.net
6th & 7th Grade Parents: We need YOU to help chaperone the 8th grade dance, on Wednesday June 16th from 8-9:30 PM. If you can stay to help clean up, you are extra welcome! Please contact: Dawn Landau, bjdqlandau@comcast.net OR Debbie Haney, debbie.h@directcopierservice.com We also need one 6th or 7th grade parent who is willing to attend part of the graduation ceremony, June 16th 7-8:30 PM, to organize and play the DVD presentation. If you are interested in helping with this presentation, please contact: Susan Collins, collinsfamily.4@comcast.net
Call out for baby photos: There will be a Guess Who display of 8th graders as babies, in the front lobby display case. If you would like to include your child's photo: please send an original or copy of a favorite photo. Be sure to put your child's name, phone number and core teacher on the back. STUDENTS MUST PICK PHOTOS UP ON LAST DAY OF SCHOOL. PHOTOS MAY NOT COME BACK TO YOU! If this is a treasured, one of a kind photos, please MAKE A COPY, as we can't guarantee that all photos will make their way back to families. There will be a collection box in the office, starting Monday the 17th. If you have questions, please Contact: Amy Slusher, aslusher@comcast.net Questions about events or if you want to help: Please contact: Dawn Landau, bjdqlandau@comcast.net OR Debbie Haney, debbie.h@directcopierservice.com

Fairhaven Grizzly Grind Coffee is now for sale. The beans are ethically traded and make an outstanding cup of ‘joe’. Your $10 order will not only get you a great pound of coffee, it will also help the ASB raise money for leadership camps and the like.
Please tell everyone you know to order a pound or two. Please make checks out to “Fairhaven Middle School” or send cash to me, Stephanie Strow, and I will get your coffee ordered. You will have it by next Friday at the latest. All orders are due by this Friday, May 14. Please specify whether you prefer ground coffee or beans, medium roast or dark roast. Decaf is available upon special request. Thanks for supporting the Fairhaven ASB!
PARENTS, STUDENTS AND STAFF: WE NEED YOUR HELP! This Saturday, May 15th, from 10am - 1pm will be the ground breaking for the new edible forest garden at FMS (to be located on the west side of the school between the gym and the soccer/lacrosse field). At this work party we will be sheet mulching, sinking fence posts, erecting fences, and building garden beds.
Starbucks has been kind enough to offer us a Make-Your-Mark grant for this work party. This grant is based on a reimbursement rate of $10/person/hour up to a maximum of $1,000. That means we need at least 34 people working 3 hours in order to be granted the full $1,000. This money will be used to purchase supplies such as compost, fence posts, building materials and more.
Having a good turnout means we'll not only be awarded the money, but we'll also get a lot accomplished!
