Dear Shuksan Families, Yesterday, Tuesday May 18, prior to the start of an afternoon class, a 7th grade student allegedly threatened another student with a knife. The threatened student immediately reported the incident. No one was injured. The police were called. The student who made the threat was expelled based on School Board policy 3200. Shuksan Middle School and the Bellingham School District have a no tolerance policy for weapons of any kind. The police are handling the matter and our school-based investigation continues. Providing a safe environment for your child is always foremost in our work. In this case, the system worked because the student came forward immediately and notified an adult. This is what we teach our students to do. This is great opportunity for you to discuss with your child the power he or she has in preventing serious safety issues at school. When your child knows of a student acting in an unsafe manner, informing an adult is essential in preventing situations from escalating. I want to commend the student and staff involved for speaking up without hesitation and acting quickly. Communicating with you is vitally important for the success of our students and the safety of all. Please contact me if you have further questions or concerns. Sincerely, Andrew Mark
