Welcome Dear families, The kids are singing in the hallways, rubbing their tummies while they pat their heads (can you do it?) and looking decidedly more mature. During the windstorm last week, we flew the kites on the upper hill. Summer is definitely on the horizon and the teachers are working harder to keep the focus on learning. The coming weeks will be full of end-of-year projects, concluding presentations and fun activities. Today, I had the pleasure of stopping in some of our classrooms to watch students engaging in learning. In Art, students were creating geometric tessellation patterns. In the Commons, 7th and 8th graders sat spellbound as they listened to the first-hand tales of two “lost boys” from Senegal. In Mrs. Padgett’s 6th grade Social Studies classroom, students were using previous research to draft an essay on the causes of the Peloponnesian War. Across the hallway, science students struggled to accept the impact of the oil leak on the Gulf of Mexico eco-systems. In the Media-Arts class, students Katie Farrar and Melissa Schedlin proudly showed me their recently completed short-film featuring the homeless animals of the Whatcom Humane Society. Two other students, Austin Koons and Stewart Relay, addressed the harm of harassment in their tightly made film about bullying. I’m impressed with the talent of these young learners and the adults who are leading them through the creative thinking processes of create, compare/contrast, and analysis. It’s a rich environment and one that brings me joy to observe. I hope that you will make a promise to yourself to find the time to stop by and visit one of our classrooms in the next school year. Thanks for your good parenting, it makes a difference! Deirdre O’Neill, Principal
School News
Fines: All library and text books must be returned, and all fines paid before students receive their yearbooks. June 10th is the final due date for library books.
Questions about next year? Will there be an activity bus for WMS students? Details are still being worked on, but it looks promising that the there will be limited routes (similar to Snow Routes) paid for by casualty insurance that will allow WMS students to more fully participate in after-school activities at FMS. We are also exploring an activity bus for FMS students who live in outlying areas. What about drop-off and parking? With the addition of 4 portables taking up parking area, congestion may become more of an issue. Please remember to PULL FORWARD INTO THE DROP OFF ZONE northeast of the cross walk and building entrance. Do not block the crosswalk or drop off your student in the “No-Idle Zone.”
Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast: On June 2 the tables are turned (and set...) as the staff of FMS show the parent volunteers how much their time & efforts are appreciated! A lovely homemade spread will be available in the library beginning at 7 AM. Why so early? Because otherwise the teachers wouldn't be able to host it, of course! Please RSVP to Nancy Reynolds (nancy.reynolds@bellinghamschools.org).
Garden Party: We hope you will join Fairhaven Staff and PTSA as we honor Deirdre O’Neill for her 37 years in education including her 10 years of leadership, encouragement and innovative ideas at Fairhaven Middle School. We will meet in the Cratsenberg Courtyard on June 7th from 4 pm – 6 pm. (It will not rain, it will not rain, it will not rain….)
ASB Fundraiser: Fairhaven Grizzly Grind Coffee sale continues. The beans are ethically traded and make an outstanding cup of ‘joe’. Your $10 order will not only get you a great pound of coffee, it will also help the ASB raise money for leadership camps and the like. Please tell everyone you know to order a pound or two. Please make checks out to “Fairhaven Middle School” or send cash to me, Stephanie Strow, and I will get your coffee ordered. Please specify whether you prefer ground coffee or beans, medium roast or dark roast. Decaf is available upon special request. Thanks for supporting the Fairhaven ASB
Lost and Found: All lost and found items are donated to local charities on the last day of school. We’ve got boxes of clothing and other items unclaimed. Please stop by and pick up coats, shirts, shoes, socks, backpacks, house keys, electronic devices (not, the pink I-pod, sorry!), jewelry, BEFORE noon on June 17.
Missing in action: Violin in black case; last seen in the girl’s locker room or main hallway May 19th. If you have any information, please call 733-5998, or phone the school office, 676-6450, ext. 4604.
The Middle School Challenge Event is Saturday, June 5th 10:30 at Whatcom Falls Park. The Challenge is to see which school brings the most students to the event. A trophy goes to the winning school. It's time to get the trophy back to Fairhaven! There are T shirts, prizes and food for everyone, as well as additional raffle prizes from local businesses. Pick up a yellow registration form in the office, and return it with parent signatures. Sign up now to get a 1/2 price waterslide pass!
Accident: One of our parents had her car sideswiped on May 21, at the end of the day, by a red colored vehicle on the west side of the building. If you witnessed this, or have any information, please phone Mrs. Reynolds, 676-6450, ext. 4604.
PTSA News:
The weeks are zipping by and the 8th grade celebrations are fast approaching. There are several areas where you can help:
Donations: funding is critical in order to pay for the 8th grade picnic, ceremony and dance. The PTSA does not sponsor the entire event and donations are critical to pay for the food, decorations and DJ for these events. All money collected and earmarked for this event, will go directly to 8th grade event costs. Please write a check for any amount you are willing to donate, add "FMS/PTSA 8th grade events" on the note line and leave donations in the red box in the office or mail to FMS, "ATT: 8th grade events".
Volunteers: We are still in need of volunteers to help set up, chaperones (refreshment tables and dance) and clean up help for the 8th grade dance, June 16th. Set up will begin at 3:15. Chaperones must be 6th and 7th grade parents. If you can stay to help clean up, it will be much appreciated. Others will do the same when your child is in 8th grade.
Baby pictures: If you would like to send in a baby picture to be displayed, please send a copy with your child's name, ph# and 1st period teacher. A collection box is in the office. These are due no later than June 1st.
Dress codes: We would like to remind all families that school dress codes and behavior codes apply to all 8th grade events. For the ceremony and dance: Please avoid prom like dresses, tuxes or formal wear. This is a dressy event, but not a formal one. Dresses should have appropriate neck lines and lengths, no dresses without backs, strapless or spaghetti straps. Shirts with collars are recommended, along with clean, neat pants. It is a special evening for our 8th graders and we hope to have it go well for them and the adults chaperoning and attending. Please contact: Dawn Landau, bjdqlandau@comcast.net or Debbie Haney, debbie.h@directcopierservice.com with any questions.
Please check out the PTSA's new web site at http://sites.google.com/site/fmsptsa/ You can still access all the PTSA info through the school web site, or bookmark this one directly. We hope this will allow us to get more current and up-to-date information to our families. And if you are interested in helping with communications next year (like if you know you can make our site better!) please get in touch through the web site!
