Bellingham School District Superintendent Dr. Greg Baker shared a Plan of Entry with the Bellingham community at the July 15 School Board meeting that focuses on listening and learning.

The plan provides a framework to support Dr. Baker's transition as the new leader of Bellingham Public Schools as he listens and learns from students, staff, families and the greater Bellingham community.

"These first several months provide an important opportunity to spend time learning about our schools and community, listening to different perspectives, understanding the history and culture, and reviewing data," Dr. Baker said. "This plan establishes a framework for me to reach out to our community and provides a variety of ways to learn about the district's strengths, improvement opportunities and challenges from multiple viewpoints."

The Plan of Entry includes a goal to visit all of the district's 21 schools by the end of September and each classroom before winter break. Dr. Baker also plans many meetings and interviews with students, staff, community leaders, educational and business partners. Beginning in September, Dr. Baker will host "Fitness Fridays," an opportunity to jog with the superintendent and enjoy a healthy snack at a neighborhood school. Dr. Baker will also publicize opportunities this fall for community members to be part of Listening Posts for coffee and conversation with him.

The plan emphasizes outreach to families and individuals who may not frequently have their voices heard.

"I want to be open, inclusive and intentional in getting to know Bellingham and our schools, and an entry plan provides a recipe for building and strengthening relationships -- an essential ingredient for student success," Dr. Baker said. "Thank you for the warm welcome. I look forward to becoming part of this wonderful community that shares a passion for student learning."
