The following is a round-up of Bellingham School District students and their awards:

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Recognized for their outstanding community service, seven high school students received Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Bellingham High senior Meghla Julin, Sehome senior Jillian Wood and Squalicum senior Ryan Morrill received Achievement Awards. They are now eligible for the Washington State Youth Volunteer of the Year Awards. Earning Merit Awards were: Bellingham senior Andrew Dumont and junior Sarah Drummond, and Sehome seniors Kenny Moffat and Rita Sodt.

All-state Music Selections

Thirty-two district students have been accepted into all-state music groups. They will perform with other top music students from across Washington from Feb. 17-19 at the Washington Music Educators Association conference in Yakima. Bellingham sophomore John Everson will participate in the band ensemble. Squalicum seniors Scott Macpherson and Bion Johnson will participate in the jazz band ensemble.

Participating in the choir ensemble will be: Bellingham junior Bless Paquette; Squalicum seniors Katie Cheeseman, Thomas Haymaker, Hadassa McGill, Jen Redmon and junior Kristina DeReese; Sehome senior Hannah Thomas, juniors Daria Harper, Kimberly Mulka,  and freshman Steven Johnson.

In the orchestra ensemble will be: Bellingham senior Alex Keyes and sophomore Colin Wheatley; Squalicum juniors Melissa Challender, George Huang and Corianne Traber; and Sehome freshmen Evan Horner, Heather Jusak and Liza Varon, sophomores Karen Frankenfeld and Whitney Wynn, juniors Chloe Binderup, Stella Day, Michael Fazio and Tami Jaton, and seniors Abby Frankenfeld, Brooke Gifford, Katharine Harris, Jeremy Jusak and Andy Wickell.

Strengthening Families Grant

Happy Valley Elementary received a $1,000 from Target to help fund its Strengthening Families Program. This program is part of a national curriculum that helps build family communication and focuses on reducing alcohol and drug use by students during their middle school years.

HOBY Leadership Scholarship Recipients

Three high school students have received Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership scholarships to attend the organization's conference in June. Annually, more than 20,000 high schools are invited to select an outstanding 10th grader to attend HOBY leadership development seminars. Recipients are Bellingham sophomore Lorraine Mae Fast; Sehome sophomore Rebar Niemi; and Squalicum sophomore Jimmy Zourkos.
