Emergency & Weather Breaking News

Emergency or Inclement Weather InformationDuring severe weather, school schedules and bus routes may change.
Updated information and changes will be posted at www.bsd501.org, tune in to local broadcast media or call 676-6400 for an after-hours recorded message.
Decisions about school schedules and bus route changes almost always are made in the early morning before school. This allows for the most current weather information to factor into the decision. This information is communicated immediately, generally before 6 a.m., using the methods above.
We understand these decisions have an impact on our families and appreciate your patience during these severe weather situations. While we know that our students and families are best served when we are open, our top concern is the safety of our students and staff.

Depending on where you live, you may or may not have a snow route. Snow routes are divided into three groups: A, B or C.

All district families will receive inclement weather procedures (please click here) in the mail in early November with the 2009-10 snow bus routes (please click here). Please keep the green flyer that you receive in the mail or refer to this electronic version when the weather is bad.

NEW for 2009-10: We have been notified that Whatcom County plans to implement emergency road restrictions — after prolonged cold weather and as the temperature rises — to prevent road surfacing damage. We have been informed that the county will not allow school buses on some roads, due to vehicle weight, during restrictions when thawing occurs. This means that the district may be forced to implement snow routes and possible other route changes during thawing when there is no snow or ice on the roads. If buses are not allowed on some roadways, parents/guardians will need to be prepared to make alternate arrangements or transport children to and from school during the county’s restriction period.
