WHATCOM MIDDLE SCHOOL RELOCATION  INPUT FOR 2010-2011 & BEYOND

Several potential scenarios are presented below to consider and also to help spur other ideas.  For each, please choose one button to indicate whether you strongly like, somewhat like, somewhat dislike or strongly dislike that particular scenario.   We have included an opportunity to add the pros and cons after each scenario. Scenarios are listed in no particular order. We strongly encourage everyone to submit additional ideas with specific solutions. (Please see question #35.)  To view the decision-making criteria and for information about Whatcom, including answers to frequently asked questions, please click here.

  1. The following best describes my relationship to the Bellingham School District:

  2. Scenario 1: Double shifting at an existing middle school. This means that one group of students typically attends school from early morning through the afternoon and the second group attends from mid-day to late afternoon or possibly early evening.

  3. Scenario 2: Double shifting at an existing high school. This means that one group of students (middle or high) typically attends school from early morning through the afternoon and the second group (middle or high) attends from mid-day to late afternoon or possibly early evening.

  4. Scenario 3: Incoming Whatcom 6th graders attend Happy Valley or Geneva elementary schools; Whatcom 7th and 8th graders are integrated into three remaining middle schools according to new temporary middle school boundaries.

  5. Scenario 4: Whatcom 6th, 7th and 8th graders are relocated and integrated (no separate classes for Whatcom students) to other district schools where space is available (6th graders go to one school, 7th graders to another and 8th graders to a third school).

  6. Scenario 5: Whatcom 6th, 7th and 8th graders are relocated and not integrated (separate classes for Whatcom students) to other district schools where space is available (6th graders go to one school, 7ths graders to another and 8th graders to a third school).

  7. Scenario 6: Lease a non-district facility that meets legal school facility requirements and students’ learning needs for some or all of Whatcom grade levels. Please include specific recommended solutions in #22 below.

  8. Scenario 7: Create temporary K-6 schools where capacity exists; Whatcom 7th and 8th graders are integrated into existing middle schools according to new temporary middle school boundaries.

  9. Scenario 8: Integrate all Whatcom students into existing three middle schools according to new temporary middle school boundaries.

  10. Scenario 9: Fairhaven, Kulshan and Shuksan each integrate one grade level of Whatcom students into their school communities.

  11. Scenario 10: Build the Aldrich Road Elementary School as soon as possible and house Whatcom students and staff there temporarily during the 2011-12 school year until Whatcom is ready. Whatcom students and staff would need to be relocated in this scenario elsewhere during the 2010-11 school year. This in no way would delay or slow the process to rebuild Whatcom. The Aldrich project could be ready to bid in approximately 45 days.
